What a wonderful book. My 5th grader is so excellent to start this first book so that she can move on top the entire series. The illustration alone helped us conclude that we would want to own the physical book vs the kindle version.

The Chocolate League #1 No Park No Sparks edition by Rah and Humphrey Children eBooks Reviews

THE CHOCOLATE LEAGUE is one of the more refreshingly unique books for youngsters to come out in a while. The writing is so very fine that it stretches the imagination that it is written by Rah and Jahi Humphrey – apparently two brothers and after much investigation in the internet (including their website0, all that we know is ‘Rah Humphrey is a 9 year old fun kid who enjoys baseball, football and science. He helps with story building, editing and image approval. He is very excited about TCL and came up with the idea for our current International Give-away promotion! Jahi Humphrey is a 7 year old sweet boy who loves to snack and play fun games outside. He helps with story building and illustrations. Jahi is very creative and came up with the TCL name!’ So unless this 9 and 7 year old are especially gifted there must be a collective ghost writer in the background. The front cover does mention that the illustrations (which are especially fine!) are by Fanny Liem and info page lists Arneta Arrinton among those assigned copyright. Now does this disturb anyone? Hopefully this vague ‘authorship’ simply adds to the fact that this is one fascinating conundrum and makes the book that much more enjoyable.

The city of origin in the story is Detroit and the cast of characters is a terrific assembly of great kids from the book’s title and the illustrations we must imagine that these are all black kids. That is another big plus for the stories. It is so refreshing to read about solid citizen and fun loving black kids who bond under the name of the Chocolate League. We meet Derrick, Jelly Bean, Roster, Peaches, and Deja and their various hangouts at the candy store and in conflict that their park is condemned. They respond to outsider kids in an appropriate and healthy manner - a fine way to keep the story on a rollercoaster ride through the environs of Detroit. This appears to be a series and we can only hope that with the next book we’ll find out more about the authors – though maybe keeping us, the reading audience scratching our heads is a positive thing. Thee are global moments in a time when those are desperately needed! Grady Harp, November 13
The Penny Candy on a certain street in Detroit was the center of the universe for the children in that neighborhood. This was the one place the children found each other while waiting in line this summer. Something had happened to their playground. They found it chained and locked with a sign that said 'Condemned'. What would the children do now?

Derrick, his brother Roster, and Jellybean Jason were the best of friends. They went to the candy store everyday where Jellybean bought, you guessed it, jelly beans! He was the kid on the block who always seemed to have money and good snacks at home. Derrick and Roster lived with their mom and didn't have much money. Dad lived somewhere else and they didn't get to see him much. Derrick tells this first story of their summer with their friends. Neighborhood children who usually got along. This summer they had fun, and we get to go along with them, to observe their fun and think about some of the lessons learned.

The Chocolate League, great name, isn't it? This is the first in a series of books about the Chocolate League. We meet each neighborhood friend and enjoy their days with them. Jahi and Rah Humphreys share their stories in this book. So well written, that the stories come alive not only for children but also adults. This is such a delightful story, full of innocence and hope told from a child's perspective. The illustrations bring the characters to life, and, we can see exactly what they look like. The stories of everyday life, in one summer, in Detroit. Couldn't be better! Note I received this e-book to read and review.

Highly Recommended. prisrob 11-15-13
This book was really cute. It was well thought out, as well as beautifully written and the illustrations were truly amazing.
The colorful imagery of this fun summertime tale makes for the ideal family read. The characters come to life with innocence and wit, and is a reminder of the joyous simplicity that comes with being a kid in the city. I am looking forward to the next installment!! Highly recommended.
The Chocolate League was a great and fun summer read for my 9 year old grandson. Not too difficult and not too easy - just right. It was easy to relate to the kids and their daily interactions with each other -- both good and bad. We can't wait for the second book to come out and see what the neighborhood friends are up to. My grandson is submitting a drawing to see if he can get his drawing and/or himself into one of the upcoming story lines. Great idea. I highly recommend this book.
